How To Play Pool: Dummies Guide

Pool for Dummies:

  1. Set up the table: Pool is played on a smaller, rectangular table with six pockets. Make sure the table is level and the pockets are properly aligned.
  2. Choose your cue: Pool cues are typically shorter and thicker than snooker cues and are used to strike the cue ball.
  3. Rack the balls: The object balls are racked in a triangle shape at the head of the table, with the 8-ball in the middle. The cue ball is placed in the “D” at the foot of the table.
  4. Break the balls: The player who breaks the balls will strike the cue ball with their cue, attempting to pot one of the object balls.
  5. Take turns: Players take turns striking the cue ball, trying to pot the object balls. The goal is to pot all of the balls of your designated group (solids or stripes) and then pot the 8-ball to win the game.
  6. Continue playing: If a player pots the 8-ball before all of their designated group is cleared, they lose the game. If a player scratches (fouls) the cue ball, their opponent will receive ball-in-hand.
