How To Play Rugby: Dummies Guide

Rugby for Dummies:

  1. The teams: Rugby is played by two teams of 15 players each. Each team has forwards, who are responsible for scrummaging and lineouts, and backs, who are responsible for passing and running with the ball.
  2. The objective: The objective of Rugby is to score points by carrying, passing or kicking the ball across the opponent’s goal line, or by kicking the ball over the opponent’s crossbar between the goalposts.
  3. Starting the game: The game starts with a kickoff, which is taken by one team and then the other team will have the possession of the ball.
  4. Scoring: Points can be scored in several ways, such as scoring a try (touching the ball down in the opponent’s in-goal area), kicking a goal (converting a try or kicking a penalty or drop goal) or kicking a penalty or drop goal.
  5. Tackling and Rucking: Players can tackle the ball carrier in order to gain possession of the ball, and a ruck is formed when one or more players are on their feet and over the ball which is on the ground.
  6. Penalties: Penalties are awarded for various infractions, such as offside, not releasing the ball, or dangerous tackles. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins.
